Background material on why a National Project is required
Regarding a deep and satisfying theory of
human language
What is being
measured in patterns of symbol co-occurrence in a body of texts. Various
arguments have been made here and there and various assumptions have been
adopted so that those symbols and those patterns can be taken as indicators of meanings.
There is a large body of practical experience in this and so forth.
But as far as I
can tell, no one has a deep and satisfying theory of human language and thought
on which to base the design of this technology.
